Hello! My name is Edie Uchida. I’m a Licensed Acupuncturist and herbalist specializing in infertility and women’s OB/GYN. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my website! What you’ll find here is a brief overview of what I do everyday in my clinic to help women get pregnant, stay pregnant and carry their babies to term. Some of the most common questions I get asked by new patients are “How can acupuncture help fertility?”, and “How can it really make a difference in what I’m already doing on my own to get pregnant, or with the help of my fertility doctor?” Here’s what I say to them, “Acupuncture can help infertility in a significant way, especially when used in conjunction with Chinese herbal medicine.” Acupuncture works by unblocking the meridians, or organ channels in the body. This allows for greater blood flow to all the organs, including the reproductive organs. As the organs get healthier and stronger they begin to function at higher capacity levels. This is what accounts for the anti-aging effect, or the health and vitality people often feel after a series of acupuncture treatments. Basically, when I’m hired as a fertility acupuncturist, it becomes my job to help a woman’s thirty or forty something year old body behave more like it’s in its twenties, when fertility was at its peak.
When women first come to my clinic for infertility, the most important thing that we do is balance her body. What does that mean? Well, imbalances cause all of your symptoms and complaints, everything from PMS, cold feet at night, shortened luteal phase, endometriosis and EVERYTHING in between. We do our best to alleviate, or at least significantly improve your symptoms and complaints by using acupuncture and/or Chinese and herbal medicine, dietary changes and vitamin/mineral therapy. Secondly, we nourish the female body with acupuncture and Chinese medicine. One of the most common deficiencies I see in my clinic is that of yin and blood deficiency. Blood is the precious fluid that carries nutrients and oxygen to every part of the body and yin is the cool, nourishing fluids in the body that include Blood. The women I see in my clinic tend toward this deficiency due to age, (late thirties through mid-forties). Furthermore, women in this day and age work really hard and deplete their bodies. Everything that we do consumes blood. On top of that, women bleed every month, and as women age, it takes longer for their bodies to recover and replenish Blood after a period. This can affect ovulation and therefore, fertility. Blood is so important to the female body. It is required to nourish the ovaries and the follicles to facilitate timely ovulation, to line the uterus to encourage implantation (of an embryo), and to nourish an embryo or fetus for a healthy pregnancy.
Most of my fertility patients are going through IUI (Intrauterine Insemination or IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). With IVF cycles, women are being monitored almost every other day with ultrasound to check the development of their follicles and their endometrial lining. If a patient reports to me that her follicles are growing too slow (or even too fast), or that her endometrial lining is too thin, if we adjust or increase her acupuncture protocol and/or Chinese medicine, we will notice changes, in many cases right away. There are definite measurable improvements in both quantity and quality of the developing follicles, even synchronizing of those follicles are possible. Even the endometrial lining has been seen to increase two to three millimeters within two to three days! This can greatly impact the success of an IVF cycle!
Though I cannot guarantee you will get pregnant under my care. I can promise you this, that I will do my best to pinpoint all of your imbalances and deficiencies and work hard to create a strategic treatment plan to alleviate or at least greatly improve upon them. When I am working with fertility patients, it is really more than just poking patients with needles. I get to know you, your story, your body, your terrain. I am with you every step of the way. I am committed to giving each and every patient my personal attention and care. My patients know that they have almost twenty-four hour access to me – accept for maybe when I am sleeping at night! Why? because I understand your urgency and the time sensitive nature of fertility treatments. If you have any questions, I would love to speak with you. Please call me at (808) 225-4700. If you would like to schedule an appointment to start fertility treatments, please call my office at (808) 589-1955. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to visit my website! The biggest concern with older women who conceive and those that conceive with the help of ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) is the prevention of miscarriage. More than half of these pregnancies result in miscarriages. Acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine can drastically reduce this number. High risk women are encouraged to continue or start acupuncture treatments early on in their pregnancies, as it can be extremely helpful with keeping a pregnancy in tact. Often times, women who have conceived through ART or are older than thirty-five years old, have imbalances and deficiencies to begin with. Acupuncture with or without Chinese herbs can balance the body, strengthen weaknesses and help a woman carry her baby to term.
